Words and Music: Larry E. Schultz
This anthem commissioned by the historic Washington Elementary School, Raleigh, North Carolina, exclaims school as a place to be honored, a people who make a difference, and a time that's meaningful. Alternative lyrics offer appropriate choices of texts for schools that are new, young, or with a long history. Also provided in the song is the creative opportunity to include the school's name in the concluding refrain.
The anthem is flexibly voiced for singing in unison or two parts by student choirs whose voices may be effectively joined by teachers, faculty, alumni and others from the school community. Though piano provides the primary accompaniment and is the only necessary accompanying instrument, optional accompaniment parts for Student Orchestra and Student Band allow student instrumentalists to participate.
Sing of Our School may be suitably adopted as a school song for commencements or graduations, and is meaningfully expressed any time school is celebrated.
