Available from Celebrating Grace, Inc.
This hymnal contains three hymn texts by Larry E. Schultz: With Water Freely Flowing is a progressive baptism text that, instead of offering harmful atonement theology and sin language, focuses on the washing away of fear as all are "engulfed by love's acceptance." Before publication, the hymn received honorable mention in a baptism hymn search by Orange United Methodist Church, Chapel Hill, NC. The hymn text was effectively paired with MERLE'S TUNE by prolific church music composer, Hal H. Hopson. Come and Feast, for All Are Welcomed was the winner of a communion hymn search by Orange United Methodist Church, Chapel Hill, NC. The hymn invites all persons to the table "spread with love." The third stanza uniquely incorporates all five human senses in its description of the communion experience. The hymn's text is set to REGENT SQUARE. I'm Coming to Gather All Peoples of Earth was initially an entry in a multi-cultural hymn text contest sponsored by United Methodists. The words, based on Isaiah 66:18, encourage unity in diversity. Though the hymnal's editors altered a phrase in the first stanza to sing: "I'm coming to gather all peoples of earth from various cultures and places of birth..." the author prefers "...from colorful cultures and places of birth..." Set to the tune, ST. DENIO, the text is meaningful for any service of worship and is especially effective for Pentecost or other services celebrating diverse peoples. Convention Press
In midst of and in response to the fundamentalist takeover of the Southern Baptist Convention, Larry E. Schultz authored the hymn text, O God We Ask for Strength. With its inclusion in The Baptist Hymnal, 1991 (a.k.a. The Christian Praise Hymnal), he became the hymnal's youngest living contributor. Though connected in the hymnal to the tune ST. AGNES, the text was originally conceived and sings more pleasingly to the tune, ST. PETER. Reprint Permissions: Music Services or CCLI. |
