Words: Larry E. Schultz, Ryan L. Schultz
Music: Larry E. Schultz Unison/Opt. Two-Part Voices, Piano Available from Alliance Music Publications This piece's text, written on the playground with the composer's son, is literally a "play on words." The many fanciful descriptions of various "flies" are enhanced by the playful piano accompaniment. The piece's inside cover provides a performance suggestion that includes visual aids that may be crafted and "flown" by the choir during the performance. A sequel to "Little Firefly" (below), this piece quotes the folk song: "Shoe Fly, Don't Bother Me!" and is enjoyable for concerts and festivals. It was premiered by the Wake County Elementary Honors Chorus, Wake County, North Carolina. Video Performance: West Choir, South Hadley Children's Chorus This choir included the piece's visual performance suggestion - especially hilarious is seeing the "shoe fly" (a shoe on a long stick) being flown around an ornate cathedral! |

Music: Larry E. Schultz Two-Part Voices, Piano Available from Alliance Music Publications Dedicated to the composer's daughter, this festival and concert favorite for elementary or middle school choirs sings of a firefly that "carries a star." To highlight that phrase of the poem, the middle section of the piece quotes "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" in combination with the main musical theme. A performance option is included with the choir using penlights in a darkened performance space to simulate dancing fireflies while the piece is sung. Music Educators will appreciate the many music elements and expressions that create a variety of teaching opportunities.
